The Earl Stevick Collection

A Collection of Miscellaneous Short Pieces Written Since 1998

Dr. Earl Stevick (1923-2013) was an influential force in English language teaching, through many conference presentations and training sessions, plus key articles and books. The latter included his groundbreaking volume Memory, Meaning and Method (Rowley: Newbury House, 1976) and award-winning classic, Teaching Languages: A Way and Ways (Boston: Heinle, 1980), along with Teaching and Learning Languages (New York: Cambridge University Press, 1982), Images and Options in the Language Classroom (New York: Cambridge University Press, 1986), Success with Foreign Languages (New York: Prentice Hall, 1989), Humanism in Language Teaching (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1990), a largely revised 20th anniversary edition of Memory, Meaning and Method (Boston: Heinle, 1996), and Working with Teaching Methods: What's at Stake? (Boston: Heinle, 1998), among others. 

 

Dr. Stevick was a member and supporter of CELEA from its early days as part of TESOL, and after it became independent. His contributions are discussed and reflected in an edited collection by Jane Arnold and Tim Murphey entitled Meaningful Action: Earl Stevick's Influence on Language Teaching (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2013).
